Agoro West Location Water Testing Report for Katito Hotels in August 2016

Background information

Katito Market is one of the busy hubs in Lower Nyakach. During market days the market has heavy human traffic because it is the center for many business persons across the region. On the 24th August, 6 people ate in one of the Hotels in Katito and got diarrhea.  The suspected cases were admitted in the Katito Health Center complaining of diarrhea and stomach upset. The Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation informed FOTO of the diarrhea cases. The victims were diagnosed with typhoid as a result of using untreated water in the Hotel. The Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation requested the FOTO project to collect samples from the hotels as below:

After incubation the results of the samples tested were as indicated above. The owners of the hotels were called for training where FOTO and MOH staff shared the outcome of the results. Many were very astonished to see very high level of contamination from the sources which people are using for drinking, hand washing and even storage containers were highly contaminated with E-coli bacteria.

Owners of the hotels were taken through the process of water testing, hygiene and sanitation management in order to prevent diarrhea. They were very happy with the information and promised to treat or boil drinking water in the hotels to reduce chances of clients getting diarrhea.

FOTO and MOH agreed to work together to ensure that people treat drinking water and observe basic hygiene standards during their hotel management. It was a very interesting exercise because FOTO learned that a lot more needs to be done in most centers in Lower Nyakach.
