Treat – Using Chlorine (Oasis) Tablets or Liquid Chlorine

Access to safe water is a fundamental human right—yet millions around the world still drink water contaminated by bacteria, viruses, and parasites. This silent threat leads to countless cases of diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, and even death, particularly among young children.

One of the simplest, most effective solutions is also one of the most empowering: teaching families to disinfect their water at home using chlorine. The Bright Water Foundation, for example, has made this a central part of its Teach–Test–Treat–Store strategy. After educating communities and testing local water sources, they train households to treat water themselves, right where they use it—transforming daily drinking into a health safeguard.

Why Point-of-Use Disinfection is Critical

Even when water comes from seemingly safe boreholes or taps, contamination can occur:

When people collect water in unclean containers,

As water is transported or set down on dirty surfaces,

Or when hands or cups repeatedly dip into the storage vessel.

That’s why point-of-use treatment—right before drinking—is essential. It ensures water is made safe after all possible points of contamination, protecting families from waterborne diseases.

 How Chlorine Treatment Works

Chlorine is one of the world’s most trusted disinfectants. It breaks down the cell walls of pathogens, effectively neutralizing bacteria and viruses that cause disease.

At the household level, chlorine is usually provided in two forms:

✅ 1. Chlorine Tablets (like Oasis tablets)

Oasis tablets are a well-known example. These tablets are made of sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) and are widely used for household water treatment.

A typical tablet is designed to treat 20–25 liters of water.

Once dissolved, it releases free chlorine, disinfecting the water within about 30 minutes.

Tablets are lightweight, sealed, and easy to distribute, making them perfect for remote or resource-limited settings.

✅ 2. Liquid Chlorine Solution

Often provided in small bottles with clear dosing instructions (like “add 1 capful to 20 liters”).

It’s cost-effective and can be locally produced, but requires careful handling to maintain strength.

Benefits of Using Chlorine at the Household Level

Prevents disease at the last step – Even if water was contaminated during collection or storage, chlorine neutralizes pathogens right before consumption.

Keeps working – Unlike some treatments, chlorine leaves a residual that continues protecting water for hours or even days.

Inexpensive and scalable – A month’s supply of Oasis tablets costs less than a few dollars, making it affordable for even low-income families.

Builds community self-reliance – Households don’t have to wait for expensive infrastructure projects. They gain direct control over their water safety.

A Story from the Field

In rural Ghana, local mothers were taught how to use Oasis tablets during home visits by SWEs. Follow-up visits revealed a powerful change: families who once faced frequent diarrhea outbreaks saw a sharp decline in sickness. Parents reported their children missing fewer school days, and mothers gained peace of mind knowing they could protect their families every day.

Addressing Taste and Trust

At first, some people worry about the faint smell or taste of chlorine. Educators reassure them that this slight odor is actually a sign of protection. They often drink the treated water themselves during demonstrations to build trust. Over time, families become not only accustomed to it but grateful for the security it provides.

Simple Steps with Big Impact

Households are taught this straightforward process:

1️⃣ Collect water in a clean container.
2️⃣ Add 1 Oasis tablet (or the right dose of liquid chlorine).
3️⃣ Stir well.
4️⃣ Wait at least 30 minutes.
5️⃣ Keep the container covered.

This simple five-step habit dramatically reduces illnesses and medical costs, and improves overall community health.
